Filtering RFI shielded chambers for O2

During the summer of 2019 a suite of MPE’s high-performance EMC filters were installed in five RFI shielded chambers at Slough, Berkshire, for a major UK telecommunications network provider, O2
Following an extensive design phase and a detailed review of requirements, the installation of the five chambers, which began in July of that year, was fulfilled by NTD Shielding Services Ltd based at St Helens, Merseyside.
NTD Shielding is an independent, UK-based, specialist provider of RF/EMC shielding solutions with over 25 years’ experience and expertise in the electronic test and measurement markets of the EMEIA region, UK and USA. NTD Shielding offers specialist RF room and EMC chamber manufacturing, along with a range of test and measurement equipment, RF/EMC consultancy services and in-house product design services.
Each of the five custom-designed, high-performance RF chambers for O2 measures 2.4m x 2.4m x 2.4m and features a fully sealed, pneumatically operated door. Prior to completion, each chamber was fitted with full internal, office-type fixtures and a comprehensive electrical wiring system including power lines, aircon, RF connections, fibre-to-data converters, digital telephone lines, and control lines for equipment such as warning lights to indicate “Test In Progress” status.
MPE’s high-performance EMC filters were specified to ensure the integrity and EMC compliance of the whole electrical system and each of its incoming lines. The power line filters manufactured by MPE for this application provide 100dB of insertion loss performance across a full frequency range to more than 20GHz. A total of five MPE filters were installed identically in each chamber – including power line filters up to 32A and MPE’s advanced control line and digital telephone line filter products.
From the start of fabrication to the conclusion of installation, the project was completed in just over 12 weeks, with all five chambers being signed off and handed over to O2 at Slough in September 2019.
