Each table is built to provide the correct geometry and grounding structure required for electrostatic discharge testing. The design integrates a horizontal coupling plane, vertical coupling plane and ground reference system in line with recognised EMC test standards.
Suitable for both development laboratories and formal compliance testing environments, these ESD tables provide a reliable foundation for performing electrostatic discharge tests using industry standard ESD simulators.

ESD Test Setup
During an electrostatic discharge test, the equipment under test is placed on an insulated surface positioned above a grounded horizontal coupling plane. Discharges are applied either directly to the equipment or to the coupling planes to simulate indirect electrostatic discharge events.
The ESD table provides the controlled physical structure required to maintain correct spacing and grounding relationships between:
• the device under test
• the discharge simulator
• the horizontal coupling plane
• the vertical coupling plane
• the ground reference plane
This configuration ensures testing can be carried out in accordance with
IEC 61000-4-2 and related EMC standards.

Standard Table Configuration
NTD Shielding’s ESD test tables are constructed using a robust wooden structure and integrated grounding system to support repeatable EMC testing.

The table provides sufficient surface area to accommodate a wide range of equipment under test while maintaining correct spacing for the coupling planes and insulation layer.
Included Components
Each ESD test table installation includes the following elements required for IEC 61000-4-2 testing:
- Horizontal Coupling Plane (HCP)
2 mm aluminium sheet mounted to the tabletop structure. The plane is removable to allow flexible testing arrangements. - Vertical Coupling Plane (VCP)
0.5 m × 0.5 m aluminium plate used for indirect discharge testing. - Insulation Sheet
1 m × 0.6 m × 2 mm Tufnol insulation sheet positioned above the coupling plane to isolate the device under test. - Ground Reference Plane
1 m × 2 m aluminium ground plane mounted to a 12 mm plywood substructure and secured using four mounting bolts for equipment grounding. - Bleeder Resistors
Two 470 ohm bleeder cables are provided to safely discharge accumulated charge during testing. - Ground Strap
A 25 mm braided grounding strap ensures reliable connection to the laboratory earth reference.
