Knitted Wire Mesh Gaskets

Knitted wire mesh gaskets are one of the most widely used EMI sealing solutions in shielded rooms, enclosures and equipment cabinets. They offer a wide compression range, accommodate surface irregularities that would defeat a rigid gasket, and are available in a range of conductive materials to meet galvanic compatibility requirements.

We supply knitted wire mesh gaskets across the standard cross-section profiles, available on spool, as coiled stock, or cut to individual gasket lengths to suit your installation.

Materials and Profiles

Wire Materials

Monel is the most common general-purpose choice, offering good corrosion resistance and reliable shielding effectiveness across most commercial EMC applications. Tin-plated copper-clad steel (TCS) provides the highest shielding effectiveness in the range, with magnetic field attenuation exceeding 80 dB and plane wave performance of 95 dB at 1 GHz. Tin-plated phosphor bronze (Sn/Ph/Bz) offers slightly higher plane wave performance and is frequently specified for semi-anechoic and fully anechoic chamber applications. Aluminium and silver-plated brass options are also available.

Cross-Section Profiles

Four standard profiles cover most installation geometries. Round cross-section suits circular groove installations and general-purpose door sealing, available from 3.18mm diameter. Rectangular cross-section suits flat-face flange applications, with standard sizes including 9.5×4.8mm and 12x11mm. Round with tail provides a flat mounting tail alongside the round section for simplified attachment. Double round with tail carries two round sections on a single tail for larger gap accommodation or higher compression load-bearing across a wide joint face. Elastomer-core versions with neoprene or silicone cores are available for combined EMI and environmental sealing.

Shielding Effectiveness

Performance data is based on 127x127mm test samples. At 100 kHz magnetic field, TCS and Sn/Ph/Bz materials exceed 80 dB attenuation. At 180 MHz electric field, all metal options achieve 130 dB or above. At 1 GHz plane wave, performance ranges from 90 dB for monel and aluminium to 110 dB for Sn/Ph/Bz. At 10 GHz, the range is 80 to 100 dB across the material options.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a mesh gasket and a fingerstock gasket?
Knitted mesh gaskets accommodate a wider compression range and suit irregular mating surface profiles. Fingerstock offers tighter dimensional control and higher cycle fatigue resistance. Mesh is often preferred for large perimeter joints and static or low-cycle seals. Fingerstock tends to be specified for frequently accessed doors.

Can mesh gaskets provide environmental sealing?
A plain wire mesh gasket provides no environmental seal on its own. Elastomer-core versions, where the mesh is knitted over a silicone or neoprene core, provide combined EMI and IP-rated environmental sealing.

What quantity increments are available?
Gaskets can be ordered on spool, in pre-coiled lengths or cut to specified individual gasket lengths. Contact us with your specification and required quantity.
