NTD’s range of manual RF shielded test boxes gives you a reliable, repeatable shielded environment without the lead time or cost of a full modular chamber build. Each model is supplied ready to use, with a downloadable spec sheet so you can match dimensions, connector interfaces and shielding effectiveness to your test setup before you order.
The range covers everything from a compact benchtop enclosure for forensic and R&D work through to a mobile shielded chamber built for antenna testing. If your project needs shielding beyond what a manual box can offer, our S100 and X100 modular chamber ranges cover that ground.

What RF shielded test boxes are used for
An RF shielded test box, sometimes called an electromagnetic shielding box or RF isolation enclosure, creates a controlled environment where a device can be tested without interference from outside signals, and without its own emissions escaping to affect nearby equipment. In practice that means repeatable results: the same test run twice gives you the same reading, because the ambient RF environment isn’t changing between runs.
Across the NSBR range, the most common applications are:
- EMC and RF compliance pre-testing. Catching issues on the bench before committing to a full accredited test lab booking, where a failed run costs both the retest fee and the schedule slip.
- Forensic device analysis. Isolating a seized phone or device from all wireless contact, so its state can’t be altered remotely while it’s being examined. NSBR 04 is the model specified most often for this work.
- Wireless R&D and QA. Testing 5G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and IoT devices without neighbouring equipment or building RF traffic corrupting the measurement.
- Production line integration. NSBR 05 is designed to work alongside automated production lines, with glove ports allowing manual intervention without breaking the shielded environment.
- Antenna testing. NSBR 06 adds over 17dB of internal reflection attenuation, reducing the signal bounce inside the enclosure that would otherwise distort readings.
- Automotive, smart grid and drone electronics. All four models are specified for terminal verification across these sectors alongside consumer wireless devices.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an electromagnetic shielding box?
An electromagnetic shielding box is an enclosure built from conductive material that blocks RF signals from passing in or out, working on the same principle as a Faraday cage. Anything placed inside is isolated from external electromagnetic interference, and its own emissions are contained. Shielding effectiveness is measured in decibels (dB) at a given frequency, so a box rated ≥80dB at 2.4GHz attenuates signals at that frequency by at least that amount.
How much shielding effectiveness do I need?
It depends on the signal strength in your environment and how sensitive your measurement is. For most bench-level EMC pre-testing and wireless QA work, the 70 to 80dB range across the NSBR models is sufficient. If you need performance beyond what a manual box offers, or across a wider frequency range, our modular chamber ranges cover 10kHz to 10GHz (S100) and up to 40GHz (X100). Get in touch if you’re not sure which side of that line your project sits on.
What does the absorber lining actually do?
Shielding stops signals entering or leaving the box. Absorber lining deals with a separate problem: signals bouncing around inside the enclosure and reaching your measurement equipment as reflections rather than direct paths. Without it, readings can be distorted by the box itself. NSBR 03 uses a 15mm absorber, NSBR 04 a low-profile absorber rated 1 to 40GHz, and NSBR 06 adds over 17dB of internal reflection attenuation for antenna work where reflections matter most.
Which RF shielded enclosure is best for forensic device analysis?
NSBR 04 is the model built specifically for forensic and R&D use. Its low-profile absorber, 200 x 120mm viewing window and 408 x 396 x 408mm internal space accommodate larger devices while keeping them visible, and it carries the full interface set (VGA, DB9, DB25, USB 2.0/3.0, SMA, RJ45, BNC, RCA and DC, with AC optional) so you can maintain the connections an examination needs without breaking isolation.
Can I work on a device while it's inside the box?
Yes, with NSBR 05. Its twin 150mm glove ports let you handle and reposition a device without opening the enclosure, and internal lighting plus a 250 x 150mm window keep the setup visible while you work. The other models in the range are opened to load and unload rather than worked in.
What's the difference between a shielded test box and a modular RF chamber?
The NSBR boxes are pre-manufactured welded enclosures, supplied ready to use for testing a device or small setup on a bench. Our S100 and X100 modular chambers are built from RF panels, designed and assembled to suit the host building, and sized for people to work inside. If your requirement has outgrown a bench enclosure, the chamber ranges are the next step.
Can these boxes be customised?
RF filter populations are specified per customer rather than supplied to a fixed standard set, and AC power is available as an option across the range. If your project needs something further outside the standard specification, get in touch and we’ll discuss a bespoke build.
Do you supply spec sheets before ordering?
Yes, every model on this page has a downloadable spec sheet linked against it, covering internal and external dimensions, shielding effectiveness across frequency, interface options, operating temperature and weight, so you can confirm fit before you commit.
