Description
The Detectus SCN-500 series from Pendulum Instruments is a family of desktop EMC scanners for locating and analysing electromagnetic emissions during product development and production quality control. A near field probe is moved over the device under test in a precise, repeatable path while a spectrum analyser measures the signal at every position. Detectus Scanning Software (DSS) then combines the spatial and spectral data into colour field maps that show exactly where emissions originate, down to individual components and traces. The series comprises four models. The SCN-522 scans in 2D over a 200 × 100 mm area, while the SCN-524, SCN-534 and SCN-564 scan in 4D, adding Z axis movement and probe rotation, with a scan volume of up to 600 × 400 × 300 mm on the largest model. Every model offers step sizes down to 0.1 mm, and each is supplied with a 3 GHz or 6 GHz near field probe kit and preamplifier, with a 10 GHz upgrade kit available. 4D scanning is the key differentiator. By rotating the probe at 1° resolution at each measuring position, the scanner finds and stores the worst case angle, so emission sources are not missed because of the probe's directional sensitivity. Combined with Z axis movement, this lets the probe follow the contours of a populated board at a constant height, measure closely around tall components such as heatsinks and electrolytic capacitors, and scan cables, connectors, racked PCBs and the sides of shielding enclosures. The scanner works with the spectrum analyser you already own, drawing on a driver library of more than 100 models from all major manufacturers. Because scans are exactly repeatable, results can be saved, compared against later design revisions and subtracted from one another to isolate the effect of a layout or component change. The same capability supports production QC, where samples can be checked against a reference to confirm that a component or supplier change has not affected emissions. NTD Shielding can advise on model selection, probe kits and options such as the laser distance meter, immunity software and shielding tent. An SCN series scanner is available from our demo pool for evaluation before purchase.
